Depend on their age, the sizing is divided into multiple categories. You will typically see these labels:
- Newborn or Infant (Preemie, from 0 to 24 months)
- Toddler (2T - 4T)
- Little Kid (4 - 6X)
- Grade school kid or Tween (7-16)
- Extended sizing
Children's clothing sizing system is divided depending on their ages.
Babies' clothing size chart
Many manufacturers also label this category as newborn or infant clothes. The sizing is based on their weight and height instead of their body’s measurements. You can check the size chart below for reference:
U.S Size | Weight (pounds) | Height (inches) |
Newborn | 4 - 8 | 17 - 19" |
3 months | 9 - 11 | 19 - 23" |
6 months | 12 - 15 | 24 - 26" |
9 months | 16 - 18 | 27 - 28" |
12 months | 19 - 20 | 29 - 30" |
18 months | 21 - 23 | 31 - 32" |
24 months | 24 - 28 | 33 - 35" |
Babies' clothing size chart is based on their weight and height
Toddlers' clothing size chart
The toddlers' sizing chart is also determined by weight and height. I can say that buying clothes for your toddlers can be the most difficult phrase because also every brand fit differently.
Also at this age, the size for boys and girls are the same because they haven’t developed their body shape yet.
Size | Weight (pounds) | Height (inches) |
2T | 24 - 28 | 33 - 35.5 |
3T | 28.5 - 32 | 36 - 38.5 |
4T | 33 - 36 | 39 - 41 |
“What does 2T mean in sizes?” you may ask. The letter “T” stands for Toddlers. This label is used to distinguish between clothes for toddlers and little kids because many bigger kids’ clothing brands have their sizes start from 2.
Toddlers' sizing usually has the letter "T" added in.
Little kids' clothing size chart
After having your little kid’s height and weight measurements, you can check the size chart below for more detail:
Size | Weight (pounds) | Height (inches) |

5 | 42 - 46 | 45 - 47 |
6 | 47 - 53 | 48 - 49 |
6X/ 7 | 54 - 58 | 50 - 51 |
From this chart, you can see both toddlers and little kids size have a size 4. However, the size 4T in the toddlers’ category is not the same as the size 4 for little kids. The “T” sizes tend to be a few inches short and have more room for diapers.
The little kids' size chart isn't separated by gender yet.
