Measure your body measurements
Some brands will specifically give you instructions about how you should measure your jeans, always follow those if given. But when it is not the case, the most common measurements that you will need to know are waistline, hips, inseam length, etc.
- Waistline: This is the smallest portion of your body. For most people, this is about 1 inch above your belly button. Most jeans from every brand are based on this measurement.
- Hips: This is where you need to measure the widest area of your hips. This is usually right below the top of your hip bones.
- Inseam length: This is the distance between your crotch and your ankle. Measuring the inside of your leg can be quite difficult sometimes so don’t hesitate to ask for help.
- Thighs: Your thigh measurement might not be important as the three of the above but you’ll need them if you’re having your jeans tailored. Wrap the measuring tape around the widest part of your thigh, this is generally just below your crotch.
Taking your body measurements can be quite difficult so it's better to have someone do it for you.
Measure your own pair of jeans
If you already have your own great-fitting pair of jeans, it’s perfectly fine to use these measurements as your guide.
- Step 1: Lay your jeans on the flat surface and use your measuring tape to measure the waistband. Then you must double this number to find your waist measurements.
- Step 2: Just like the previous step, you need to measure the widest points and the jeans and double that measurement. This point is about 3 inches from the crotch stitch.
- Step 3: To get the right thigh measurement, you need to measure from the crotch across to the outside of the leg.
- Step 4: If you want your new jeans to have the same rise as your previous ones, measure from the back crotch seam to the top of the waistband.

Useful jeans measuring tips.
Even you’re taking your measurements by yourself or having someone to help you with that, there are a few tips that you will need to bear in mind.
- Before taking the measurements, put on the shoe that you’re planning to wear with your jeans to have a more accurate reading with a better visualization.
- Don’t pull the measuring tape too tight around your body. Even though you will get a smaller reading, it will make your jeans not so comfortable as a consequence.
- You can bend at the waist to your side to find your natural crease before taking the waistline measurement.
- Always know what rise you’re planning to get and what fit you the best before measuring your body. For example, low-rise jeans’ waistband doesn’t come anywhere near your natural waist crease.
- Many jeans shrink after being washed a few times so it is recommended to get about 2-3 inches bigger to anticipate this.
Rule number 1: Never pull your measuring tape too tight.
